Bug invasion #930612

Asked May 04, 2026, 7:56 PM EDT

I have attached a photo of insects that have invaded us this spring, they are everywhere, on the house in the lawn when you walk through. I hope you can make out by the photo and why we have an issue this year or what we can do to maybe deter them? Thank you. Nancy Gellert

Expert Response

Good Morning Nancy,

Thanks for your question. I am sorry but your photo would not load. My computer said the file is corrupt or the program is not supported.

Please try to submit another photo that I would be able to open.

Thanks

Good Morning,

Thanks for the photo. I've done some research and I believe the insect is a type of midge:

If my identification is correct, they do not appear to be biting insects. Do you live near water or have standing water around your yard? From the information, it states the eggs are laid in standing water, similar to a mosquito.   There are several predators listed. I believe they would be good food for the birds and other predators.

If you have standing water, you might try Bt or Bacillus thuringiensis which is the chemical in mosquito dunks or granules :https://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/btgen.html

Here is a link from the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District for residents: https://mmcd.org/residents-guide/ this discusses eliminating standing water in your yard, and the use of Bt.

Good Luck!

Thank you for this information, we have seen a lot less of them as the week is going on so that is good!
