Farm direct products #930576

Asked May 04, 2026, 3:57 PM EDT

Hello, I recently attended the small Farm conference and went to a class on Farm direct. I just want to clarify that if my product meets Farm direct qualifications and I add to my label that the product is Labeled this product is homemade and not prepared in an inspected food establishment, as well as not for resale then I am good to make it at home and not in a commercial kitchen?

Expert Response

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for reaching out to Ask Extension with your question.

That is correct—under the Oregon Farm Direct Marketing Law, as long as your product meets all the qualifications outlined in the flow chart and the accompanying notes, you are not required to use a licensed, inspected food establishment.

To ensure your specific product and process meet all the necessary requirements, please follow the guidance provided in this publication: EM 9205: Oregon's Farm Direct Marketing Law. It is important to pay close attention to the "Additional Resources" section mentioned in the guide to ensure appropriate labeling and safety standards are met. If you are unsure your product qualifies, please reach out to the Oregon Department of Agriculture Food Safety Division.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions! You’re also welcome to leave a voicemail on the OSU Food Safety and Preservation Helpline at<personal data hidden>. We currently offer a weekly callback service and will return your call as staffing allows.

Best of luck with your products!
