Maple tree pruning #930538

Asked May 04, 2026, 12:17 PM EDT

I have two old, healthy maple trees in my backyard. Should I have them pruned next late winter to reduce the weight or just leave them alone?

Expert Response

Good Morning,

Thanks for your question.

You did not indicate how large the trees are, or if there is some problem with the branches that you feel need to be pruned. You can submit photos to us to view along with your question.

Please click on the following link all about pruning trees: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/pruning-trees-and-shrubs This includes a discussion about why you would want to prune a larger tree.

If pruning would require a ladder, or they are very large trees, we suggest you hire and arborist to evaluate the work. Here is a link about how to hire a tree care professional: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/how-hire-tree-care-professional

Good Luck!
