the invasive shiny geranium #930496

Asked May 04, 2026, 4:23 AM EDT

What is the most efficient and effective method of getting rid of "fields" of the invasive shiny geranium weed? It's cropped itself next to and spread in between other plants in our treed neighborhood in SE Eugene.

Lane County Oregon

Expert Response

Your options are to manually remove the plants by hand or with hand tools and then apply a mulch to smother the seeds that remain in the soil, or apply an herbicide. If removing by hand or tool, try to get as much of the root system as possible so that it doesn't resprout. You will need to continue to monitor the site in the coming years and repeat treatment if needed. For more on managing shiny geranium, including the use of herbicides, refer to the following: https://solvepestproblems.oregonstate.edu/weeds/shiny-geranium
