shade clematis #930479

Asked May 03, 2026, 9:20 PM EDT

We live in St Louis Park. I have an area on the north side of our house that needs help. The area is only 6x3' but it's all shade. Originally I was hoping for some sort of bush that would be about 4 feet tall. Now I am thinking of trying to grow clematis and surround it with either ferns or hostas. My question is, could you recommend a clematis that would grow well in shade? I am open to any ideas you would be willing suggest. I'd appreciate your thoughts! Thank you in advance.

There are many clematis that do well in partial sun/shady conditions. Clematis do very well on a trellis. I suggest you  visit your local nursery and see what varieties they like. I found these listed on line as a starting point:  Clematis 'Nelly Moser', C. alpina, C. montana, and C. viticellavarieties like 'Prince Charles' and 'Madame Julia Correvon'
