Poppies have a very deep taproot. This makes transplanting them difficult. It is best to transplant them when they are small. Soak the ground first to keep the roots moist and to facilitate digging deeply enough to dig up the entire root. The root breaks easily making it difficult to dig up.
Collecting seeds and planting them in the spring usually is more successful than transplanting.
