Soil Testing Necessary? #930289

Asked May 01, 2026, 12:41 PM EDT

My wife and I moved into our house in Perkins Township in December and are preparing some landscaping projects. Before we begin planting we were wondering if it would be a good idea to get our soil tested to know what we are working with. If it is necessary are there any soil testing resources the county extension office can point us to? Thank you!

Expert Response

Hi, Trae! Thanks for reaching out. Soil testing is helpful for lawns and landscapes and is especially important for vegetable gardens. It should be done before a garden is initially planted, then every 2-3 years thereafter AND if there are any issues with crops noted. A good time to test is the fall. This will allow ample time to receive the tests and make any amendments to the soil before spring planting.

Below is helpful information about soil testing, including how to collect a sample and where to send the sample. The second article is helpful for interpreting and implementing amendment recommendations.

Thanks again for reaching out! Let us know if you have any questions. Happy gardening!
