Umbrella tree questions #930241

Asked May 01, 2026, 9:02 AM EDT

We have an umbrella tree that my wife's grandma had in her house. Ever since taking over care for it, we haven't done well keeping it healthy. I think it has scale, aphids, or mealybugs currently, and it had them a year ago when I had to cut off one of the main trunks because it had gone too far. I repotted it last year hoping that would help. I'm sure working on getting rid of the scale, aphids, or mealybugs will help, and I thought I had done that last summer, but they're back. Any thoughts you have will be wonderful, thank you!

Thank you for reaching out. I see a few things that may be possibly contributing to the plant's problems. I don't think there's enough soil in your pot. Using potting soil, fill it up and maybe leave about 2 inches from the top. Just enough to get a good watering going. It looks like you may have aphids. I don't have a real good picture of what it is, but I don't think it's scale. Most of the time scale is on the stem. As far as mealy bugs, they have pinkish purple bodies and they're covered in a white powdery wax coating that kinda looks like cotton. I don't know if you'll see that or not. Aphids are small bugs that usually white or kind of brownish black they'll be on the under side of the leaves.  Maybe also along where the stem attaches to the trunk. You can take care of any of these with using an insecticidal soap.  Be sure to follow label instructions.  Before you start, take your plant and I would take it outside spray the leaves off really well. See if you can get the bugs off. Otherwise try wiping it off to remove bugs. After you get it, sprayed or wiped off spray the insecticidal soap, getting both the top and the bottom of the leaves. I'd spray it about once every seven days for a month. Don't leave plant in the sun, but it can be outside for the summer in the shade.  Make sure you keep the plant watered decently.   When you spray - spray in the morning, it's a little bit easier on the plant. I like to top dress the soil with a tone released fertilizer about once a month if you leave it outside for the summer.  Otherwise maybe fertilize a couple times a year March through October.  You can read online for more information.  The plant is actually called a schefflera.  Good luck!
