Maple tree leaves issue #930211

Asked April 30, 2026, 6:06 PM EDT

We have a 35 year-old healthy maple tree. Spring leaves are now wilting and turning black. Possibly fungus? See photos. Last fall the tree had a lot of spotted lantern flies on it. Is this a serious issue?

Expert Response

While the symptoms don't look like typical frost/freeze damage, given the lack of rain we have had this spring, we do not think it is a fungal issue. Many deciduous trees can contract anthracnose, which is a fungal disease. Most of the time, this is a cosmetic issue. If there is heavy damage, the tree may drop its leaves and healthy trees can regrow leaves for the season.

For the freeze damage, the same may occur. Damaged leaf tissue can't heal but the tree will grow and push out new growth.

Monitor for watering needs since we are in a prolonged and worsening drought due to insufficient rainfall since 2024. Even large established trees need to be watered to prevent drought stress.
