Dead spirea? #930197

Asked April 30, 2026, 3:58 PM EDT

It seems like my spirea bushes died over the winter. See attached pictures. Has this winter been especially hard on spirea bushes?

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

Those look like my 25 year old spirea. I believe they are alive and will grow soon as we get some consistent warmer weather. I cut mine back at this point because most of those stems are dry and brittle and the new growth will come either with shoots from the roots or sprouts low on those old stem. A nice way to give them a desired shape and looking good when they leaf out.

Please do reply back to this if you do not see new growth by the middle of May.
