Shrub Arrangement #930174

Asked April 30, 2026, 2:01 PM EDT

Hello, I am thinking about planting three shrubs- Hazelnut, Dogwood, and Witch Hazel to take the place of some buckthorn that has been removed. This space would be the boundary between our house and our neighbors. I would potentially be purchasing 9 of the shrubs (3 of each). Do you think it would be better to plant the same shrubs together or alternate them? I want to create some privacy but also want it to look nice. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I could also just plant one of the types and get 9 of them or so. Thanks! Laura Murtha

Thank you for reaching out.

These are really big shrubs.  Understand that you can trim them, but you can’t stop what they are supposed to do.. Be sure to plant them with sufficient space to grow.  Dogwoods are shorter than the other two.  Just keep that in mind. Consider their size and if they will be going into the neighbors yard.

Everyone’s idea for their home decor is different as is your yard decor.   I probably would only use two varieties alternating them, but this is your yard.  If you’re buying them locally, take some time and set them out as they would be in your yard so you can see how they will look.  Be sure to keep them well watered all summer into the fall as long as you can.

I hope this helps!
