Moss growing in yard #930157

Asked April 30, 2026, 12:26 PM EDT

I am wondering how to get rid of moss growing in my yard and prevent it from coming back. It seems to be happening in more shaded areas. Is it a nutrient problem?

Ramsey County Minnesota

Expert Response

Moss growth is caused by excessive shade, moisture and compacted soil.  To eliminate it, you must first remove the soil by raking it out and then apply a shade-tolerant grass.  Prune overhead branches to allow more light and add more nitrogen.  Consider a soil test (https://soiltest.cfans.umn.edu/), as moss thrives in acidic soil.  If the test shows this is the case, you might be advised to add lime to the area.  For more information, see https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/managing-moss-problems-in-lawns/
