Native shade trees #930101

Asked April 29, 2026, 11:19 PM EDT

What are some native shade trees I could plant in my yard. I'm near Boardman so I have sandy alkaline soils in a more arid environment.

Morrow County Oregon

Expert Response

Dear Michael,

Thanks for contacting us about native tree species for your area. Two deciduous trees that can serve as shade trees are the Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) which grows to about 30 feet tall, and Oregon White Oak (Quercus garryana) which grows significantly larger.

There are also two conifers which will provide some shade if you can accommodate their width: Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis).

I suggest you visit a local nursery and to see what other options may be available. They will not necessarily be native species, but you might find non-natives that are adapted to your growing conditions.
