rhodie pruning #930080

Asked April 29, 2026, 5:24 PM EDT

How deeply can a leggy rhode be pruned without serious damage? Further, will pruning cause the rhodie to be fuller,, less leggy?

Expert Response

The response a Rhododendron has to severe pruning (rejuvenation) varies and it’s hard to predict. Here is a general article on Rhododendron care and pruning.
Why is your plant “leggy”? If there isn’t enough light, or it is struggling for some reason, then it might again regrow leggy. However, if you have checked the care of the plant (mulch, watering) and maybe pruned other plants so it gets adequate light, it might be more full.
Another idea, rather than cutting the whole thing back is to remove a fourth or a third of the branches each year after blooming. In three to five years you’ll have a refreshed shrub.
Hope this makes sense. Send me a photo of the landscape if you want more help troubleshooting this.
