Reuse of wine barrels for gardening #929792

Can anyone offer suggestions on how to clean the residue from wine barrels so they can be used to plant vegetables?

Thank you for your question, Tina.  You needn’t do anything to clean out the barrels (or half barrels) before adding potting soil.  Having a clean barrel is essential for making wine, but isn’t critical for growing plants, whose roots (in native soil) are surrounded by billions of microbes.  But here’s some advice about cleaning them, if you feel it necessary:  https://www.extension.purdue.edu/extmedia/FS/FS-57-W.pdf
