Found this bug on my walk. What the heck is it?

Hi Sandy,
I'm sorry to see that beautiful moth got smooshed.
It is a native sphinx moth (Family: Sphingidae) called the white-lined sphinx (Hyles lineata).
Caterpillars of sphinx moths are called hornworms, because most species have a dorsal spike at the end of the abdomen. White-lined sphinx caterpillars feed on plants in the evening primrose family, including fireweed and related plants.
The adult moths mainly fly during evening or night and they feed on nectar.
