Damage to Redbud Tree Leaves #929334

Asked April 23, 2026, 10:50 AM EDT

We have several redbuds on our property. Yesterday we noticed most of the leaves on two of our redbuds are brown or black, and shriveled. One has been on the property for a while and the other is a few years old and is multi-stemmed. They are in similar areas of our yard away from the house. We had a freeze here early Tuesday morning. Is it possible the leaves are damaged from the freeze? Will the trees be able to replace the damaged leaves? Are there any actions we should or should not do to help the tree? Thanks!

Expert Response

Yes, the freezing overnight temps were the issue, and yes, the trees will probably be fine, but it may take them time (perhaps a few weeks, but probably less) to generate and expand new growth to replace the leaves and twig tips that were killed by the freeze. Many plants are being stressed by the ongoing drought, and it would benefit them to be watered occasionally during dry periods. We suggest checking the trees for water and soaking the root zone well if the soil feels somewhat dry to the touch about six inches deep.
