Hello. While weeding a found a redbud sapling with orange growth on an older stem leaves. I was wondering what would have caused this. Thank you

Expert Response

We can't see enough clear detail in the symptoms, but it's not something we recognize and may be a harmless consequence of the dying stem. What killed the stem is hard to say, but it might be drought stress, roots kept too wet, a fungal canker, physical injury, or the young foliage on that stem emerged early and got killed by an overnight frost/freeze earlier this season. Trim back the stem portion that does not have healthy, normal-looking foliage so it doesn't harbor anything infectious. The rest of the new growth looks good.
