Ash Borer Tree crack in the bark #928814

Asked April 18, 2026, 3:14 PM EDT

Dear Tree Care Advisors, I have a Ash Borer tree which has a crack in the middle of the bark. The crack is getting to the bottom of the tree. I have attached couple of pictures for reference. I was looking for suggestion if it is safe to keep the tree or better to cut. I am willing to look at if some other arrangements can be done to keep the tree. I had another similar tree with same case and it broke into the half during heavy rain and wind. Since this one is close to my garage, im little concerned. Appreciate any suggestions.

I would contact an ISA certified arborist as soon as you can. It can be difficult to definitively say a tree will fail without an in-person visit. A certified arborist would be best qualified to give you an assessment. Since it is close to a garage, and we are in the stormy spring season, sooner is better than later.

I am concerned about two things, the depth of the crack, and the fact that the tree is a type of ash. If this tree is not currently being treated to prevent emerald ash borer, it will not matter if the crack is serious or not, it only be a matter of time before the insect kills it. Hennepin County is in the bullseye for this invasive species.

Best,

Shane
