Height/variety in a shady backyard with a black walnut #928699

Asked April 17, 2026, 11:56 AM EDT

I have a shady backyard with a black walnut tree, and I'm looking to add some height and variety to the plants that are there. Currently, there are a couple of varieties of hostas, a fern, astilbe, wild ginger, sedum along the fence. I'm pondering if a couple of blue point junipers or arborvitae could survive back here along the fence-- I'm worried about the shady environment, possibility for winter burn, and proximity to the walnut. Would love to have some feedback. A photo is attached of the backyard as it is, and the second is an AI generated photo with suggestions (I don't trust AI like I trust you guys!). I'm also thinking about adding a larger planting ring around the tree itself. What plants other than hostas could handle it? And, any ground cover alternatives that might work back here (as you can see, the grass is not going well).

As you know, it’s difficult to select plants to grow under a tree and especially a black walnut. It’s not only the juglone, but the shade and water consumption of the tree.

Whatever you select to plant there needs to be able to grow in dry conditions. You should really monitor the fine during the day to see how many hours of sun those shrubs will get and base your selection it that. You will have to water a lot because that tree is a water hog.

I wouldn’t plant astilbes as they do best in a damp environment. Hostas are work horses and there are many varieties to choose from. You may want to try some sedum for ground covers.

Juniper or arborvitae could work but water-water-water. The Junipers will have a pricklier feel so if you are walking back there, keep this in mind.
