As you know, it’s difficult to select plants to grow under a tree and especially a black walnut. It’s not only the juglone, but the shade and water consumption of the tree.
Whatever you select to plant there needs to be able to grow in dry conditions. You should really monitor the fine during the day to see how many hours of sun those shrubs will get and base your selection it that. You will have to water a lot because that tree is a water hog.
I wouldn’t plant astilbes as they do best in a damp environment. Hostas are work horses and there are many varieties to choose from. You may want to try some sedum for ground covers.
Juniper or arborvitae could work but water-water-water. The Junipers will have a pricklier feel so if you are walking back there, keep this in mind.
