Asked April 16, 2026, 7:51 PM EDT

I want to switch to using native plants in my 6 containers of various sizes I put on my apartment patio. What native plants do well in full sun in Cleveland Ohio? Do I need special soil etc. ? Thank you Kathleen

Expert Response

Switching to native perennials in your patio container garden is a great idea! For continuous blooms, you may want to incorporate some annuals, but there are many options for perennials that should do well for you. Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia) bloom a long time, as do purple coneflowers (Echinacea). Other choices include Butterfly Weed (Asclepius tuberosa), Blazing Star (Liatrus) Sedum, Treadleaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis verticillata), Aster for late season color, native grass Little Bluestem (Schizachryium scoparium).

It is important that the pots have good drainage, to avoid root rot. Using a high quality potting soil mixed with compost should provide a well draining soil with nutrients.

Good luck to you this summer with your flowers!
