I have a lot of cedar mulch that contains wood and many needles. Can it be used on raspberry bushes?

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Mary.  Cedar as a mulch, whether bark or needles, is not recommended to fertilize cane berries.   The needles "bind" together, and prevent water from getting to the plants' roots.  Shredded cedar bark gets mixed reviews, and it depends on the treatments the trees received, as well as whether they are infected with one of several diseases.

Here's an article that's still relevant, even though we're technically in spring:  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/news/late-winter-care-keeps-raspberries-blackberries-productive

Here's a helpful chart comparing types of mulch:  https://ucanr.edu/sites/default/files/2020-12/340305.pdf

Hope this is helpful!
