Tree cutting issue #928463

Asked April 15, 2026, 12:06 PM EDT

Hi, this tree cut was done around 5 years ago. What can be done to stop the bugs and save the tree? Thank you! Marie Hilligoss<personal data hidden>

Expert Response

Hi Marie,

Bugs aren’t causing the issue, they’re attracted by what looks like existing rot in the tree. The old custom of filling the hole with cement will only make the problem worse.

The best thing to do is ask a certified arborist to check the tree to make sure internal rot is not weakening the trunk, which could cause the tree to fall. You should ask them to assess the overall health of the tree.

Not all tree services have arborists on staff. Call and ask if they have an arborist who can look at the tree.

Here’s more information on hiring an arborist:

Hope this helps. Thanks.

Thank you for the quick response. We'll have it looked at. Would very sad to see this tree go.

I’m so sorry. I’ve had to take some big trees down and it’s heartbreaking. I hope your expert will be able to give you a clear opinion about this.

Thanks again.
