Frost damage this weekend? #928456

Asked April 15, 2026, 11:13 AM EDT

Am wondering if expected freezing night temperatures this weekend will damage buds on azaleas and rhododendrons in Minneapolis. If so, anything I can do to protect them? Also, we have begun to rake out some perennial beds because the plants are coming up. (irises, daylillies, veronica, coneflowers, yarrow) Should we stop raking until after the freeze? Which perennials are most likely to be damaged if uncovered? Thanks, Debra

Thank you for reaching out.

Yes depending on how cold it actually gets and for how long the buds could be affected.  Cover your shrubs with a sheet or blanket.

As far as raking, you won’t hurt the plants, but could affect the insects hiding in the leaves.  My suggestion would be to watch when you clean and if you run into ladybugs, etc. leave that area for next week.  The perennials may get a little frostbite, but it won’t hurt them overall.

Have a great spring!
