Button Bush #928340

Asked April 14, 2026, 10:15 AM EDT

We have a button bush in our yard that we want to move down by our lake. I read that it can be planted in the water. Is this accurate? If so does that mean the entire plant is submerged, or does part of the stem need to be above the water?

Expert Response

Hi Mark,

I recommend planting on your shoreline directly next to the water, but not in the water. Button bush has suckers and if conditions are right, it will spread into the lake.

If you plant directly into the lake, general wave activity may dislodge or loosen the sediment around your transplant and as a result may not be successful.
