Annabelle Hydrangeas -How do I prune them #928330

Asked April 14, 2026, 7:47 AM EDT

Hello I have Annabelle hydrangeas that were planted 2 years ago and I need to know how to prune them this spring. Do I cut them down by half? And what is the best way to care for them during the spring and summer months. Thank you

Dakota County Minnesota

Expert Response

Annabelle Hydrangeas bloom on new wood. That is the new growth that you see this year. You can prune them back in late winter all the way to the ground if you like.

This time of year you can prune out any dead stems and back to a shape or height  that you like. You should do this before the new growth begins as you will have less chance to accidentally prune the new growth.

It will bloom on the new growth that comes this year.
