Black dots on chard #928319

Asked April 13, 2026, 8:43 PM EDT

One stock of my chart had many little black dots of various sizes. What is it and what should I do?

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Jenny.  Unfortunately, we cannot diagnose a plant problem such as this without clear, close-up photos of the "little black dots".  This diagnostic page list the potential insect pests (https://pnwhandbooks.org/insect/crop-pests?combine=Chard%2C+Swiss), and this one lists the known diseases (https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-and-disease-descriptions?title=chard).

If you can't attach photos to help us identify the issue(s), I suggest that you bring samples into the Clackamas County Extension office, preferably when Master Gardeners are staffing there.  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/clackamas   You can call the office to see when the Master Gardeners' hours are.  Good luck!
