Clothes Moth Infestation #928318

Asked April 13, 2026, 8:42 PM EDT

This began last spring and resumed two weeks ago. We have moths in every room and closet in our house. We have tried pheromone traps, cedar, sticky traps in light sockets, dry cleaning and washing clothes with BugOut! The moths settle on the ceilings after dark and we vacuum approximately 20-30 each evening. How can we mitigate if we can't find the source?

Expert Response

Hi Beth,

Without finding the source, you will have a seemingly infinite source of moths. Any management done in the absence of eliminating their source will only provide temporarily relief.

Have you found any larvae, or just adult moths? I have 2 theories, which are not mutually exclusive.

1. These are some other type of moth, rather than a cloths moth, hence why their food source has been difficult to locate. Having a high resolution picture or seeing the moths in person can confirm this.

2. The moths are invading from outside, rather than inside the house. If this is the case, management involves sealing potential entry points, such as the gaps along doors/windows/vents/electrical sockets/etc.

Let me know if you have further questions.
