Brown spots in lawn #928276

Asked April 13, 2026, 3:10 PM EDT

Hi, I have lived in my current house in MN for two years. When we first moved in the grass was reasonably green. Since then large brown spots have popped up all over my front yard. I have been told this may be due to grubs but I am not convinced as I have not seen them. My backyard does not have the same view either. I generally have not done anything to my yard besides mow and rake in the fall. I'm also not interesting in using chemicals in my yard. Do you have any thoughts on what may be causing the brown spots and how I can make my grass more green going forward?

Thanks for the question. There could be a number of causes. You did not say when the brown spots appeared. Yellowing or browning grass in August is an early symptom of white grub damage. European chafers are another possibility, less common but more damaging. Here is a link for more information: https://extension.umn.edu/lawn-insects/european-chafer

Another possibility is heat and drought stress. Here is a link for more information: https://apps.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/turf/irregular/other.html

Another possibility is crabgrass, which is an annual, dying and turning brown in the fall by the time of a killing frost. This would most likely be in areas along the edges or in high traffic areas not typically in isolated patches. Link to more information: https://extension.umn.edu/weeds/crabgrass

I hope this helps you have a beautiful lawn.
