Black walnut no leaves yet #927993

Asked April 10, 2026, 11:03 AM EDT

Last summer you helped me identify these two trees that I found growing from seed in my garden as black walnut and silver oak. I winterized them inside. Several weeks ago the oak started producing leaves. However black walnut is doing nothing. Can you tell if this stem is even alive? I see nothing green on it but it seems bendable vs dry.

Black walnuts are one of the latest Ohio native trees to leaf out, often not leafing out till end April to mid May.
The stem looks good.

Thank you. When it warms up I'll set it outside. I'm glad to know it's not dead.
