I have young trees of heaven growing near a horse foundation. Recommendations appear to use chemicals but not until July. Is this true or can I start treating them now? In either case what’s the best way to address this?

Tree-of-heaven can be hard to control once established. The reason for waiting until mid to late summer to apply an herbicide is because the plant is pulling carbohydrates into the roots then and that is what you want to kill. If you apply herbicide earlier in the season you only kill the leaves and not necessarily the roots.
