Controlling spread of Zauschneria garrettii 'PWWG01S' #927969

Asked April 09, 2026, 10:40 PM EDT

This plant might be an excellent choice for inclusion in my current plans for a pollinator garden. However I am concerned about its rapid spread. How can I keep it confined to a specific area?

Thank you.

Hi Jack,

Zauschneria garrettii can be divided to control its growth, preferably in the early spring. Dig the suckers out and replant elsewhere or discard.

Interestingly, Plant Select indicates that this plant grows "at a reasonable rate" (see link below), however our PlantTalk resource states it can grow rapidly. It may depend on your specific conditions. Note that this plant prefers well-draining soil and does well up to 8150 ft.

It sounds like dividing early in the season as needed will be the best way to keep your plant in check.
