Guidance and referrals to plant fescue lawns #927949

Asked April 09, 2026, 4:39 PM EDT

Our townhome association is exploring the possibility of overseeding our Kentuck bluegrass side and back yards with lower maintenance, drought resistant mixed fesues lawns. In this community we have areas that are shady, areas that receive direct sunlight and areas that border marshlands, that are wetter in the spring and after rainstorms. We are looking for someone to advise us and to recommend landscape companies that have experience overseeding traditional laws with fescues.

Expert Response

Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

Please click on the following link all about purchasing lawn seed: https://extension.umn.edu/lawn-care/buying-turfgrass-seed-minnesota-lawns

All of the information on our website is researched based. So you can rely on the accuracy. If you scroll down, there is a list of retailers link.

Here is another link about planting a fine fescue lawn: https://extension.umn.edu/lawns-and-landscapes/planting-and-maintaining-fine-fescue-lawn There are additional links at this website for bee lawns.

We do not recommend specific landscape companies. I am sure you could have a discussion with some of them and decide on a contractor.

Your information indicates you live in Ramsey County. You might contact the Ramsey County Soil and Water Conservation District : https://www.ramseycountymn.gov/residents/environment/soil-water-conservation

They have technicians who would do a site visit and advise you on the marshland/wet areas. You might consider a pollinator garden or a rain garden, depending on your site.

Good Luck!
