Spring care for ferns #927909

Asked April 09, 2026, 11:46 AM EDT

I have several old fern plants that were left alone last fall and now all the stalks are laying down with some green foliage. Should I cut them down or leave them alone?

Expert Response

This is normal after winter weather and it won't harm the ferns, which will send up new growth soon if the roots are still healthy. You can cut off the old foliage once the new growth is beginning to unfurl if you want (for aesthetics), but it's not necessary.
