Sea Buckthorn #927863

Asked April 08, 2026, 5:48 PM EDT

Hello, I want to ad sea buckthorn to my edible garden and am wondering if sea buckthorn (seaberry) is considered invasive. I do not want to ad to the problem. I was told they are not becauuse they do not row in shade and the seeds do not propagate easily from birds. Can you confirm that it is safe to plant these nutritious bushes in my garden? Thanks

Expert Response

Thank you for your question for Extension Master Gardeners. Sea buckthorns are not considered invasive, although they may spread with root suckers. Their berries are edible, as I think you know, and have many health benefits. This plant is hardy to Zone 3 and drought tolerant. You will need a separate male and female plant for it to produce its berries. Here is a fact sheet from Extension:

Happy gardening and hope you enjoy your seaberries!
