Is this knotweed? #927668

Asked April 06, 2026, 3:04 PM EDT

I just moved into a rental in Creswell Oregon and this is coming up all in the yard. I would like to know if it is indeed Japanese knot wood, or one of the other invasive knotweed and what can I do about getting rid of it . Thank you

Greetings Katherine,

It certainly looks like Japanese knotweed in your photo. And even if it is another variety of knotweed, the process for management and elimination is the same.

You can find a great OSU Extension guide for managing knotweed here:

https://solvepestproblems.oregonstate.edu/weeds/knotweeds

As you will see, removal of the plants by digging them out, grazing (goats), or selective chemical control (e.g., glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup) is the only way to get rid of them. Even with those measures, it will take several years of close monitoring and persistent removal to eliminate the knotweeds from your yard.

For highly invasive plants like knotweed, we recommend reporting it to the Oregon Invasives Hotline:

https://oregoninvasiveshotline.org/

They can also be reached by phone at 1-866-INVADER. They have additional helpful information and resources for eliminating invasive species.

Happy gardening,
