Rabbits Everywhere #927628

Asked April 06, 2026, 11:51 AM EDT

I have been volunteering(as a MG) at an historical garden in Portsmouth. We have been dealing with rabbit issues for years, but they have multiplied and now they are completely damaging all of our plantings. I have read much information about the possibility of "uninviting" the rabbits to our gardens. Would contacting NH Fish and Game help ? This past winter the rabbits really tore through much of our garden area, eating many plants down to the nubs in the ground. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Anne,

Thank you for reaching out to the UNH Extension Yard & Garden Infoline. The following research was completed by Jenn Solms, both an UNH Extension Master Gardener and Natural Resource Steward Volunteer.

Regarding your question if NH Fish & Game can be contacted regarding the Rabbit damage to the gardens you help maintain. Here is a link to their main page regarding wildlife control and management: https://www.wildlife.nh.gov/wildlife-and-habitat/nuisance-wildlife

Please note that only licensed Wildlife Control Operators can legally remove wildlife from properties (both residential and commercial): https://www.wildlife.nh.gov/wildlife-and-habitat/nuisance-wildlife/wildlife-control-operators

We are not certain that they would be able to remove rabbits in this situation or not. Please contact them directly to see what options might be available.

I have included links to a few fact sheets that provide some suggestions. Unfortunately much of the advise is about building enclosures around the garden or the individual plant.

I found this interesting idea of using pine cones in this link: https://ui.charlotte.edu/story/when-rabbits-decide/

Thanks again for submitting your question and please reach out if you have any further questions! Have a great day!
