Identify root in compost #927490

Asked April 04, 2026, 11:25 AM EDT

These roots began in some woodchip compost from the Rocky River reservation and are now in my leaf mold compost. I'm not sure if they are harmless decomposers or an invasive that I should not use on my garden bed. Hoping you can help!

Expert Response

I have tried to identify this root using a few Plant ID apps that I have but unfortunately have not been able to get a good identification.   I would suggest raking through your compost to unearth any additional roots and then discard anything you find.   I would hesitate to use this compost on anything edible since we cannot identify it.

I will show this root to my fellow MGV friends Thursday evening at our meeting and see it there is anyone with more information.

I am sorry that I don't have more/better information for you.
