Peach scion grafting #927338

Asked April 02, 2026, 11:15 AM EDT

I have an old peach tree of an unknown species that produces delicious fruit. Can I graft from this old tree to another peach tree (different species) or do I have to graft to a root stock?

Expert Response

You can absolutely graft onto the scion of another peach tree. You can in fact grow multiple different varieties on the same tree. You can also bench graft the mature peach to a new root stock to propagate the same tree you like (fully, not just a branch). You need only the scion to be compatible with the existing root stock. So for example, you cannot  grow apples on a peach tree, but you may have luck adding a plum or apricot scion, as they're very closely related and of the same genus.

Best of luck
