Are morning glories invasive to Minnesota? #927307

Asked April 01, 2026, 5:55 PM EDT

My grandmother had morning glories in Texas and they were so lovely. I always dreamed of having some when I bought my own house. I'm curious if they're considered invasive here in Minnesota. If not, what would the easiest way be to find and grow them? I have a small container garden box that's off the ground I was thinking of trying with a trellis. Thank you!

Thank you for your question for Extension Master Gardeners. I also love the morning glory plant, but it is considered invasive or a weed to many gardeners and farmers. It spreads rapidly and has many seeds which drop and germinate each year. They can spread over a shrub or other plants because of their vining growth. You can buy seeds or even plants in most garden centers in the spring if you want to try them. If you can contain the vines, morning glory plants look very nice on a trellis. Good luck and happy gardening (when it warms up)!
