Conifer Germinants Seed Coat Retention #927263

Asked April 01, 2026, 11:58 AM EDT

Hello, I work for a conifer nursery that mass produces seedlings for purposes such as reforestation. We sometimes have an issue with some orders germinating, and then being unable to fully shed their seed coats, leaving the tips of their leaves stuck inside. This can be problematic because this stresses out the seedling and promotes diseases. This happens on some species more than others, such as yellow pine. What might be some possible solutions to reduce or prevent this issue? Thank you

Expert Response

Problems with the seed coat sticking to the new leaf or cotyledon can be caused by:
  • Shallow planting - seed coat is not dislodged during emergence through the soil media. In this case, planting a little deeper may help.
  • Dry soil or dry air - insufficient moisture or low humidity can cause seed coat to dry and stick. Increasing moisture and/or humidity can soften the seed coat and make it more likely to be shed.
