Garden soil root masses #927262

Asked April 01, 2026, 11:57 AM EDT

Hello- my veggie garden is located on a point on Crystal Lake backyard. It’s the only sunny spot in my yard. No matter how much compost, leaves and organic matter I add each year to the raised beds, the soil is one thick mass of root fiber. The plants never thrive, because the soil is compressed, thick with root matter and won’t hold moisture. Each year, I have to turn over the soil to pull out the root masses. I would rather not disturb the soil, but feel I must. I would love to have one of your master gardeners who may be familiar with this problem to come to my home to consult on what I can do to improve the soil quality. I would gladly make a donation to the Master Gardeners association for this service. Thank you so much!! Chris

Expert Response

Sounds to me like there are trees or shrubs with aggressive roots that are thriving on your soil amendments. Perhaps you can remove the soil from the raised beds, then add a barrier to prevent the roots from invading your vegetable bed, then refill the beds and grow veggies.

Making home visits is not part of our Master Gardener mission, however, if you contact the Dakota County MG group directly you may find a friendly neighbor willing to pay you a visit and advise you.  https://www.dakotamastergardeners.org/contact-us
