Hardwood/shrub cuttings install timing #927160

Asked March 31, 2026, 12:05 PM EDT

Hi - I'm seeing varying information on when hybrid poplar cuttings can be planted. Can I install cuttings now since the frost is out in my area, or do I wait for 50 degree soil temp or mid may after frost risk diminishes? My understanding is Willow and Red Osier Dogwood cuttings can go in now, but if that's not accurate please let me know. Thanks!

I   cannot find any temperature restrictions on planting, only on when to take the cuttings which is now.  Here is basic information which you probably have.
Propagating shrubs from cuttings involves taking
4–6 inch stem cuttings (softwood in spring/summer, hardwood in winter),
removing lower leaves, dipping in rooting hormone, and placing in
moist, well-draining media like perlite
. Keep cuttings humid with a plastic cover in bright, indirect light until roots form in 4–6 weeks. I personally propagated a couple shrubs using the layering method of bending the branch down into the soil and keeping it there with a sod pin for one season. It rooted and I then clipped it from the mother plant and planted it where I wanted it.  It should be an easy process with your plants.
