My tree is loosing its bark

Mower County Minnesota

Expert Response

It could be squirrel damage. The patch is very localized. Squirrels have striped bar on many trees over the winter. Some experts think it is juvenile behavior and others think they are looking for green wood to get water. Some think it is caused by both. Your tree should be fine. Wrapping the trunk with chicken wire will stop squirrels. They will probably stop anyway once trees begin to leaf out.
