Expert Response

This is a tough question and one we all struggle with. While we love the spring blooms and want to attract and feed the early bees and other pollinators, we also get those pesky rabbits, deer and squirrels. It is disheartening.

Your best bet for deer is to plant bulbs that they don’t like. Allium, narcissus, squill and Frittilaria are in this category. Otherwise, you need serious deer fencing.

For rabbits and squirrels, you can cover some of the areas with chicken wire when planting to prevent them from being dug up. This is mostly helpful for squirrels.

Sometimes sprinkling red pepper around them will deter squirrels and rabbits but you have to repeat the application after every rainfall. This is not a research based option but some people feel it helps.

If you’ve had a big problem with tulips being eaten in the past I would recommend you plant these in clusters and protect them with a cage made of hardware cloth.
