living willow fencing #927079

Asked March 30, 2026, 1:59 PM EDT

Hello! We have a fence that needs replacing and love the concept to living willow fencing. We have access to friends land and could get cut willow branches to use but want to make sure that we don't use invasive species. If you could offer any guidance or contact to anyone who has done this beforet it would be greatly appreciated! We are also aware of the upkeep it would need, but we have more time than money at this point and feel this just may be the answer we are looking for. WE look forward to your response, thank you! Expert Response

I have no first hand experience with a living fence but I imagine you would grow it similar to a hedge, plants planted close together to create a dense thicket.

Here is a link of what I found. It speaks to living snow fence but also has information on using willows. https://extension.umn.edu/agroforestry/living-snow-fences#plant-selection-1952411. Good luck with this project!
