Pine tree losing new growth and more #927078

I have a few things going on with an old pine tree, not sure if they're related or what to do.
First, a few months ago many (hundreds, but I didn't count) of the new branch links fell off. Not sure the exact word here, but they are 4-6" of relatively new growth. So many fell that they covered the lawn.
Next, about a month ago a very large section of the top fell off in high winds. It was probably 20'+ long. It appeared that the top of the tree had split between two leaders, and this one fell off.
Finally, over the weekend the other part of the top fell off. Again, somewhere in the 15-20' range. Breezy yes, but not exactly high winds.
This is a fairly large tree, and one that we'd rather not remove. But this combination of issues seems like more than just bad luck. Do you have any idea of what it might be? Can a pine tree still thrive with the top gone? There are no obvious signs of pests or other external factors.
Thank you!

The branch tips were probably cut by red squirrels. This is a common occurrence which usually doesn't affect the tree's health. Learn more here:
Trees with codominant leaders often split and break in the manner you have described. Judicious pruning prevents this, but in your case the second leader probably developed at a place too high to be reached or even noticed by a home owner.
Based upon what we can see in the photo, the tree appears to be healthy and not seriously disfigured by the missing top. We suggest asking a certified arborist to evaluate the tree's condition and determine what, if anything, needs to be done to maintain its health. The tree appears to be well worth any care and attention that may be needed.
