Removing Lesser Celandine #927031
Asked March 29, 2026, 9:44 PM EDT
Since none of the herbicides at my local nursery or Home Depo contain glyphosphate (the recommended herbicide), what do you recommended for removal? It would be helpful to know what to avoid/what doesn't work, as well as what is the most recommended of the other ingredients. Perhaps you could update your recommendations since the average gardener can't find an herbicide with glyphosphate

Extension resources we've consulted still recommend glyphosate as the most effective herbicide ingredient for dealing with Lesser Celandine. Penn State's thorough web page about this weed does note a few other alternative ingredients, which in some cases may need to be used in combination in order to work sufficiently well. Note that dicamba, one of the options listed, may injure tree and shrub roots if too much of the application is absorbed by nearby desirable plants. Triclopyr may also run a greater risk of moving off-site in water runoff (or potentially leaching into groundwater) compared to glyphosate, which binds to soil if it contacts the ground. Although herbicide inventory varies from one retailer to the next, glyphosate is still on the market, even though the Roundup brand has been switching its products in the past few years to using a different active ingredient.
