What shrubs grow well in Zone 3 (Itasca Co.) and survive a bit more shade than sun? I'm looking for something ornamental or with flowers that tolerates Zone 3, some sandy soil, and some shade. KS

There are a number of native shrubs that are ornamental and will do well in zone 3. Some of them also have cultivars that have been bred for a particular trait that will also do well. Some provide 3 seasons of interest like the Black Chokeberry, and some may not bloom but have interesting foliage that changes color. Some are bred to be more yellowish, others more on the blue-green side.

Dogwood, Serviceberry, Winterberry, Black chokeberry, Nicebark, False cypress, and some Hydrangeas should do well in zone 3.

When you visit a nursery or shop online, be sure to check the information for their zone tolerance and mature size.
