Hi,
If there's any way you can afford pruning by a certified arborist it would be worth it. Your tree has structural problems, particularly on the left side of the photo. Too many big branches are growing off the trunk too close to each other. This can lead to weaknesses and breakages in storms. The tree was improperly pruned before — all the short branch stubs should not be there.
It’s hard to tell whether both big branches on the left should be removed. On a mature tree you shouldn’t remove more than a third of the canopy and preferably less.
If you want to try to fix this yourself, these web sites will be helpful. Especially pay attention to how to make proper pruning cuts. Bad pruning will inhibit healing and can introduce diseases or rot.
I hope this helps. Thanks.
